TAX RULES FOR LEASES

Sales tax based on full selling price

In most states, you PAY sales tax with each monthly lease payment. A few (looking at you IL and TX) will charge sales tax on the full purchase price of the vehicle. Which frankly seems very unfair when we’re leasing the vehicle. At least TX has no income tax. In IL...umm...never mind.

Sales tax due up front

In some states (looking at you NY, MN and OH) your tax is DUE up-front on the sum of the lease payments. You can PAY monthly (see option below). But you’re borrowing the money to pay sales tax up front. And then paying interest with your monthly payment on the amount borrowed to pay the sales tax.
